Today, I want to chat about nappy bag essentials, how to choose the perfect bag, and what to pack for both newborns and toddlers. So, grab a cuppa and let’s dive into the world of what to pack in a nappy bag for an organised mum!

What to Pack in a Nappy Bag

Nappy Bag Essentials:

First things first, let’s talk about the essentials. When it comes to nappy bags, it’s not just about stuffing in a few nappies and wipes. It’s about being ready for any situation that might pop up while you’re out and about – and honestly, sometimes situations you could never imagine pop up and you just learn about something else you should have put in there. Sometimes being organised with how your nappy bag is packed can be the difference between a smooth sailing day and disaster when you’re out and about!

We’ve compiled a list of the basics to get you started.

What to Pack In A Nappy Bag

  • Nappies: The number one essential, of course! For newborns, aim for at least 6-8 if you’ll be out all day, and for toddlers, around 4 should do the trick.
  • Baby Wipes: Trust me; you’ll need plenty of these. They’re not just for bums; they clean sticky hands, dirty faces, and unexpected messes. I know that I used baby wipes all day long and a big packet is often a blessing.
  • Changing Mat: Most nappy bags come with a foldable changing mat. It’s a game-changer when you find yourself in a not-so-clean public restroom.
  • Nappy Rash Cream: A must for newborns with sensitive skin. Apply a thin layer after each change to keep those little bums happy.
  • Plastic Bags: For soiled nappies and messy clothes. Trust me, you’ll want a few of these – you never know when you’ll need one!! When my son was young, I even kept a big bin bag in my nappy bag in case I got vomited on or poo’ed on and needed to completely put clothes away!!
  • Change of Clothes: You’ll appreciate having a clean outfit for your little one when the unexpected (and messy) happens. Consider too different styles, like a singlet, pants, a jumper – so you can layer depending on the weather. Don’t forget too that when your baby grows into a new size you need to update the nappy bag too – nothing worse than desperately needing a fresh outfit but all you have on hand is something too small!
  • Feeding Essentials: If you’re nursing, all you might want is a muslin wrap for modesty or creating a space free of distractions for your little one. If you’re bottle-feeding, bring along bottles, formula, and a bottle warmer. When I was bottle feeding, I separated out a bottle’s worth of formula into little tubs so I didn’t have to measure on the go!
  • Dummies and Comforters: A real saviour for soothing a fussy baby – having some spares in your bag will be a lifesaver!
  • Snacks: For older babies and toddlers, a small container of snacks can be a lifesaver while waiting in line or stuck in traffic. I like to bring fresh fruit, but also “long lasting snacks” like cereal for fine motor which will keep little ones busy when you need a good distraction are always a winner!
  • Toys: Something to keep your little one entertained during nappy changes or in long queues.
  • Nursing Cover: If you’re breastfeeding and prefer some privacy – it’s absolutely fine if you don’t do this too though, of course!
  • Sunscreen and Hat: For those sunny days when a sudden trip to the park is too tempting to resist. This is definitely an important inclusion in what to pack in a nappy bag for an Australian summer!
  • Hand Sanitiser: For you and anyone else who might be handling your little one. You never know what gross things you might touch! I even have a spray bottle so I can wipe down sticky surfaces before we eat!
  • Emergency Contact Info: Just in case. Keep a card with emergency numbers and medical information, like doctors, who to contact in an emergency and any medication required, known medical issues and allergies.

When Choosing a Nappy Bag:

The type of nappy bag you choose is as important as what to pack in a nappy bag. You’ll be carrying it around everywhere, so it needs to be comfortable and suit your style. When I was looking for a nappy bag, I found that a few key features were absolute must-haves:

  • Size: Make sure it’s roomy enough to fit all your essentials but not so big that you feel like you’re carrying a suitcase.
  • Compartments: Pockets and compartments are your friends. They keep things organised and easy to find.
  • Comfort: A bag with adjustable, padded shoulder straps is a must. You’ll thank me later when you’re lugging it around all day.
  • Easy to Clean: Spills and messes are inevitable. Look for a bag that’s easy to wipe down or even machine washable.
  • Style: Don’t forget about style. You can find nappy bags in all sorts of designs, from classic to trendy. Choose one that reflects your personality.

Now, let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of what to pack for different stages:

What to Pack in a Nappy Bag – Newborns:

When you’ve got a newborn in tow, you need a fully stocked nappy bag. They can go through multiple nappies and outfit changes in a day. Here’s what to consider:

  • Extra Clothes: Newborns are notorious for those surprise blowouts. Make sure you have plenty of onesies, socks, and hats, and consider packing different layers – singlets, short sleeves, long sleeves.
  • Baby Blanket: For swaddling, covering, or even laying out as a makeshift changing mat.
  • Burp Cloths: You’ll be using these constantly for spit-up and drool, so make sure to have a few on board!
  • Nursing Cover: If you’re breastfeeding, a nursing cover is a handy addition for a bit of privacy if you want one. You can also make a makeshift cover with a thin piece of muslin. Sometimes it’s not even about your privacy, but the privacy of a sticky-beak baby who wants to see what’s going on around them.
  • Baby Lotion: For those tiny baby massages and keeping their skin soft.

Little Pompom has some fantastic products that are perfect for nappy bag essentials. Our baby blankets are not only soft and versatile but also incredibly stylish. They’re great for swaddling, covering the changing mat, or using as a nursing cover.

What to Pack in a Nappy Bag – Toddlers:

Once your little one becomes a toddler, you can lighten the load a bit, but new essentials come into play:

  • Snacks: Toddlers love to eat, so keep some healthy snacks on hand, and plenty of them! Toddlers are hungry little creatures who love variety. And a well stocked nappy bag full of snacks can keep a fussy toddler from chucking a wobbly just when you need a moment of peace!
  • A Bib: For eating on the go and preventing gorgeous outfits being covered in stains, keeping a bib (and a wet bag for afterwards!) in your nappy bag is a great idea.
  • Sippy Cup or Water Bottle: Stay hydrated on the go. Consider a colour theme if you have multiple children – so it’s easy to know exactly which water bottle to reach for in a rush
  • Tissues or Wet Wipes: For sticky hands, dirty faces, and wiping down surfaces. Toddlers get messy quickly and without much effort – you’ll be grateful for the wipes, trust me!
  • Crayons and Small Notebook: To keep them entertained during restaurant waits or doctor’s appointments. I also keep a small bag of stickers and a couple of toy cars in my bag!

Little Pom Pom stocks wonderful feeding bibs that are great inclusions in your nappy bag. They’ll keep your little one looking fresh and clean no matter where you are, and are definitely something to consider when wondering what to pack in a nappy bag!
